Citizens Cope

Music
A friend of mine (one with the hugest heart) often “puts me on” to some amazing music. His musical library is an array of sounds intertwining with his personality and mood at the time. I never know what he is about to tell me to listen to, but what I do know is that it is going to be interesting.

One night we were talking and he asked me if I had ever heard of a song called ‘Healing Hands’. It is by the front man of a band known as Citizen’s Cope. Of course my R & B/ Neo-Soul self had no idea what he was talking about. Don’t get me wrong, I love an array of music. However, Jill Scott and Adele have been playing in my car for the past few months and it wasn’t until recently that I completely download all of my music onto my new iPod and I’ve had it for months. So, I am totally unfamiliar as to what comes on the radio or even if the station I am listening to is ‘popular’ nowadays. My time has long passed the hip hop stations (there is but so much Nicki Minaj and Lil’ Wayne I can take), can’t listen to old school R&B all day (every time I hear a Temptations song I think of Leon as David Ruffin), so I figure I am somewhere in between.

He told me that I had to listen to the song. He mentioned that when he heard it, he thought of me and figured it would be something that I would like. I had a worried look. I mean I completely adore my friend, but his favorite band would totally have to grow on me and I am not sure how deeply rooted those vines would. Yet, he assured me that I would like it. And I promised I would listen.

When I finally had the chance to hear the song, this is what I heard…Soul! And now, every time I hear it, it reminds me of him.
